Meeting with Tokyo Governor Yoichi Masuzoe

Sergei Sobyanin: Thank you, Mr Masuzoe. I’m glad to see you again. I remember our meeting in Moscow. We managed to address many issues. Most importantly, we agreed to improve our cooperation and meet in Tokyo. Our cities are not only sister cities but also major economic partners. The past 25 years show that they are bound by many economic, sociopolitical, sport and environmental ties. Today, it’s time not only to summarise the results but also to sign a new memorandum and outline plans for interaction.

Our cities face similar challenges and problems. That’s why we’re signing today a memorandum on urban planning and development, the environment and promoting sport. These are the areas that can be further developed in the near future. The implementation of these plans will be beneficial both for Tokyo and Moscow.

I know that you’re actively preparing for the 2020 Olympic Games. Moscow is one of the world’s leaders in the number of sports events it hosts. The IAAF World Championships was held in Moscow not so long ago. The city will also host the IIHF Ice Hockey World Championships in 2016 and the FIFA World Cup in 2018. Moscow athletes and volunteers actively take part in preparations for the Olympic Games, where the Russian national team competes. In 1980, Moscow even hosted the Summer Olympics. I would like to thank you once again for the invitation to visit Tokyo. I hope this visit will be very beneficial and we will reach a new level of cooperation.

Sergei Sobyanin: Mr Masuzoe, I would like to thank you once again for arranging the Moscow delegation’s visit. Our cities are the world’s largest metropolises, and we deal with similar problems. Our cooperation is marking its 25th anniversary, and our cities are sister cities. Today it’s time to renew our partnership by signing a new action plan.

I’m sure it will reach a new level of development. This promotes close contact between our cities, businesses and people. Thank you again, Mr Masuzoe, for the warm welcome and for organising this meeting. I hope we will meet regularly and exchange delegations.
